Real-time Calgary, every question

Howdy. Real-time Calgary, every question Ask away.

Eight questions to ask before you hire

Walking in with these makes a big difference. Save the list, ask them all, and watch how comfortable they are answering.

  1. 1
Are you a fiduciary at all times when working with me, in writing?
A "best interest" rule is not the same as a written fiduciary commitment.
  2. 2
How are you compensated — fee-only, fee-based, or commission?
Three different models with very different conflict profiles.
  3. 3
What licenses and designations do you hold, and which ones are revocable?
CFP and CIM are revocable for misconduct. Some are not.
  4. 4
Will I work with you, or someone on your team?
The senior advisor who pitches sometimes hands you off after sign-up.
  5. 5
Do you produce a written plan I keep, even if I leave?
A real plan exists outside their software. You should have the document.
  6. 6
Can I see a redacted example of the plan I would receive?
Real planners can produce one. Salespeople cannot.
  7. 7
How do you handle tax planning — yourself, with an accountant, or not at all?
Plans that ignore taxes are not plans.
  8. 8
What is the total all-in annual cost I would pay across all accounts?
Single number, after all underlying fund fees, in dollars not percentages.
